Five years Defenders of Valor - Happy Birthday!
Jul 05, 2008 - 11:22 PM - by Astaren
Five years ago, on a summer sunday just like today, twelve random Warcraft III players from various countries all over europe agreed to meet in a lonely chat-channel in-game. They were a group of friends and the purpose of their meeting was to take their friendship to a new level, they wanted to found a gaming community. "Defenders of Valor" would be the name of the clan, as was decided by vote a few days before; "Furbolgs of Northrend" was the close runner-up. When it was time to assemble in-game, however, out of the twelve friends only two were showing up - too little to start a clan, as Warcraft III requires at least ten players to do so. Only me and Stukof appeared as promised - our project over already before it began? We did not want to give up just yet: Asking random players to create secondary accounts and help us just with the foundation, we somehow managed to collect ten signatures to make battle.net register our clan. Sure, we weren't exactly in a good starting position - those people helping us were making jokes wondering how somebody could want to join a clan like ours. That day, I promised myself to make those people beg to join my guild some day.

Nowadays, nothing reminds of those humble beginnings anymore. Today, Defenders of Valor turned 5 years old - surviving for such a long time is a significant accomplishment alone for a gaming community, as 90% of all guilds and clans don't even make it to their first birthday. Our only achivement isn't just having survived for 60 month, that is 1826,25 days or about 43830 hours, however. We are very successful in World of Warcraft end-game raiding and PvP, have great members and can look back to many glorious battles won. Today, many people wish they could be a member of our guild, indeed.

After our community managed to build up somewhat of an identity with making and playing custom maps in Warcraft III, we moved to World of Warcraft. From there on, a unique success-story began with so far no end in sight. I'd like to to thank the members of Defenders of Valor, both members who are still actively playing and those whose achivements date back a bit more, for making possible what we all are so much proud of today. You have made Defenders of Valor special, we were always known for our great community and we've mastered many challenges which seemed to be impossible because we managed to work together as community and stuck arround even when things weren't going as well as expected. It is a honor to be in the same guild with everyone of you.

I am sure we'll make it another five years, with at least as many accomplishments as over the last five years. All we have to do is to stay just the way we are right now. We can not only look back to a great past, but we are also well prepared for a prosperous future. Happy birthday!
